Flat Sheets: Why They Matter

Top Sheet Image

Sure, they look great in a linen closet, but do they really serve a bigger purpose?

A flat sheet is a layer of fabric between the mattress and the comforter. Mostly, you’ll find a flat sheet accompanied by a fitted sheet – a sheet with bunching at the corners which is meant to go over your mattress.

So, do we really need it? Here are the benefits of having a flat sheet:

Versatile
During the summer months, a flat sheet can be used as a top sheet in place of a comforter to help fight the summer heat. Conversely, you could use a flat sheet between you and the mattress to create a comfy and even surface to sleep on. This can also be used for temperature regulation, adding or taking away the sheet to suit your needs without having to replace your bedding.

Protective
A flat sheet can serve as a layer of protection for your duvet or comforter. Acting as a barrier between you and the comforter, it protects it from your body oils, perspiration and dust mites.

Easy to Clean
Since a top sheet isn’t as bulky as a comforter or duvet, cleaning is much simpler and takes less time. When using a flat sheet on both sides of a duvet/ comforter, it makes the laundering process much less of a hassle.

Aesthetic
Top sheets can also be used even on top of comforters to provide a clean and modern look.
